FACTS
ABOUT DYSLEXIA
- Dyslexia
is a specific language disability in which a person
has problems in reading because they cannot learn and
remember whole words by sight. While dyslexia is seen
more often in males, it occurs in both sexes. It is
not "outgrown" and affects people throughout the life
cycle.
- An
individual with dyslexia cannot manage their words. Often
they transpose letters such as b for d or cannot recall
the words they want to say.
- They
often have difficulty in spelling and in mathematics
as well. Their handwriting can be slow, cramped, and
hard to understand.
- Since
dyslexia is not confined to academics, an individual can find
organizing and managing their life difficult and often
may be unclear in their sense of direction and of organization.
- Very
often a person with dyslexia is a gifted, creative,
productive individual. Many famous people have dyslexia. It has been said that Albert Einstein was dyslexic.
- A
person with dyslexia or a language-based learning difference can be helped by the Orton-Gillingham
approach to the teaching of reading. This is a phonetic,
multi-sensory approach which is sequential and cumulative.
Although it is never too late to provide remediation,
the earlier the better.
